From Our Website
Chris first opened the practice in 1981 on the Harrogate side of the Starbeck level crossing. At that time he continued to work as a sessional optometrist and tutor at the Leeds General Infirmary building professional relationships with our ophthalmology colleagues. In those early years, his dad John was often found manning the desk on a Saturday morning! John soon developed an affinity for optometry and qualified an optometrist in 1985 at the age of 50! He retired to Wales in his sixties and still talks fondly of those years in practice.

We are all aware of the importance of protecting our skin from the damaging effects of UV radiation. It is equally as important to look after our eyes as UV light is associated with a number of eye conditions such as pterygium, pingueculae, cataract and age related macular degeneration (AMD). Although the ozone layer is depleted in the polar regions, the concentration of UV in the UK has remained pretty stable. All sunglasses that are sold in Europe must have a CE mark and conform to BS EN 1836:1997 ensuring standards of optical quality, robustness and UV protection.
Orthokeratology (OrthoK) is an exciting technique of fitting specially designed RGP contact lenses that are worn overnight to gently reshape the cornea so that you can see clearly the following day on removal of the lenses. OrthoK lenses are worn whilst asleep when they gently reshape the front of the eye, the cornea, correcting your refractive error. You will be able to see well without glasses or contact lenses for a full day or more but the lenses must be worn each night whilst asleep to maintain the effect.

Christopher Nixon Optometrists are committed to providing you with the most comprehensive eye exam. We continually invest in the most up to date equipment and services. Optomap imaging has revolutionised our retinal examinations since 2006 and we now offer a range of OCT scans including a premium glaucoma module for early detection of optic nerve changes and both full colour and infrared scanning for our diabetic and ARMD patients. We take your eyecare very seriously. In 2006 we introduced the Optomap retinal imaging system with ultra-widefield scanning laser technology to support or optometrists in detecting, analysing and monitoring ocular disease that may present in the retinal periphery and otherwise go undetected using traditional techniques and equipment.
