  • friendly professional staff and really quick service
  • none

I had never been to Mellis before, but needed to be seen quite quickly. I phoned on the Friday and was booked in for the Monday (despite covid pressures) all the staff were friendly and professional. The two ladies (sorry I can't remember names) spent a long time with me helping me chose frames. Nothing was too much trouble. My glasses came within 72 hours.
Would definitely recommend

Fabulous family run opticians. Took my two children for their first sight tests and you sense immediately that Ian and the staff here genuinely care. My wife and I have registered as patients now.

The staff were extremely professional, polite and friendly. I needed to make a last minute appointment to have my sight classified for IBTA (International Blind Tennis Association) and the staff squeezed me in with less than 24hrs notice. Mr Mellis showed a genuine interest and radiated warmth and passion for getting the best for those he supports, as long as taking the time to explain and explore different sight-related issues that is previously not felt comfortable asking other opticians/optometrists. I’d highly recommend getting your sight classification / eye tests here, it was a smooth, stress free experience!

Fantastic service - can't thank Wendy and Sharon enough for their help in obtaining glasses for our son - had some difficulties with a well known highstreet optician but Mellis Eyecare managed to source frames for my son within 24 hours of our initial enquiry. Their service is second to none. Will certianly be recommending them to others.

Hubby and myself have been going to Mellis Eyecare Thornaby for a couple of years for eye tests and glasses.
We have good and sound advice about our up to date eye health, and very reasonable pricing on their glasses and products offered.
The service is excellent and very friendly, and children's eye care is also very important to this optical team. Nothing is too much trouble, and they are very thorough in checking eye health.

Iain put me at ease and explained everything to me. There was no pressure to choose glasses and I must have tried about 30 pairs on! The ones I bought in the end are a jazzy purple pair and I love them!
See you at my next eye test.

Customer Testimonials

Great with the kids when they had their eye test done and he explained everything to them.

Absolutely fantastic service provided. After visiting this business I wouldn't dream of using a 'faceless' national again. These guys really care and go the extra mile in customer service.

Excellent experience. Went to N. Ormesby branch, staff were fantastic with my 2 little ones and optician was very thorough and knowledgable. Great service. Would recommend to anyone

From Our Website

James is our locum optometrist who fills in at North Ormesby when Iain is at Thornaby. James also graduated from Bradford University and he also started his career at a local, independent optometrist before becoming a locum optometrist. Iain and Robert Mellis are brothers who grew up in Stockton and after their time at university, both brothers decided to return to the area that they love. In 2012 the opportunity to purchase the North Ormesby and Thornaby practices of E.G.E. Halls Opticians arose and they leapt at the chance.

Yearly visit to Mellis eyecare, cannot fault the service received. Iain had great rapport with both children and answered all their questions, in which my daughter had a few! I would recommend to make an appt, Iain makes you feel confortable and completes a thorough examination. Always friendly and professional, the staff at Mellis Eyecare are brilliant! Extremely helpful and reliable, they always provide top class customer service and I would, and have, be happy to recommend them! Great opticians, staff are welcoming and friendly and more than happy to help even when previously asked to source my son some glasses they went above and beyond, great choice in frames that cover all budgets and they ensure correct fitting service along with exceptional after care.

Don't worry about the cost of your child's sight test. Sight Tests are paid for by the NHS for children under 16. If they need glasses they will be issued with an NHS optical voucher to go towards the cost of the spectacles. We have a large range of glasses which would be totally covered by the voucher so you won't need to pay anything.

The Scheme is available for all patients registered to a GP in the North Tees or the South Tees area. To enter the scheme you will need to have had an up to date sight test in the last year. Your current optician or ophthalmologist will be able to tell you if you meet the requirements (6/18 or less in BE or N9 or less in BE) and they will be able to provide you with a referral into the scheme. If your last sight test was longer than a year ago another sight test would be required with your optician before entering the scheme.
