Products & Services

Children Specialist Eyecare

At McCrystal Opticians, children are made to feel welcome with a wonderful choice of frames. We often need to modify or add to existing frames to get that perfect fit, particularly for those with abnormal facial symmetry or facial trauma. We also stock Erin's World frames which provide a custom fit for individuals with Down syndrome. We want to make choosing children's glasses a fun and engaging experience and have a great range of frames for boys and girls.

We fully understand the challenges that can exist with visual stress and dyslexia. Through his own personal challenges with dyslexia, Principal Optometrist, Noel McCrystal, embarked on a journey of detecting and helping individuals with dyslexia.

Multisensory Optometry

McCrystal Opticians are amongst the first practices in the UK and Ireland to combine the unique Schoolvision and Orthoscopics light based systems in practice, for those with visual perception Problems

Myopia Control

What we engage in at McCrystal Opticians is a deeper understanding of where the myopia develops from in the first place, and hence provide very precise and tailored optical solutions in the form of specialised spectacles and contact lenses to calm its development.

Our son was experiencing difficulties reading, i.e. words shimmering on the page, also seeing the board in school and homework spellings were an issue, taking up significant time at night. After a Dyslexia diagnosis we attended Mr. Mc Crystal who assessed our son’s eyesight and put him on a two year programme specifically focused at correcting his vision, which we have found to be very beneficial increasing our son’s confidence and maximising his ability. In our son’s own words “my eyes used to be tired, I used to see shimmers, it was hard to read and now it is much easier to read and spell”. I could not recommend Mr. Mc Crystal’s Opticians highly enough for children experiencing literacy difficulties. We found the programme excellent and the staff very helpful, supportive, efficient and good communicators and would have no problem discussing our experience of this programme with other parents.

Cataracts are the most common eye complication seen by the Optometrist. A cataract is a clouding of the eye's internal natural lens, situated just behind the Iris and pupil (approx 10mm in diameter). The lens material is made up mostly of proteins and water. The proteins are arranged in a precise pattern which make the lens very clear and transparent, but as we age, they can 'clump' together forming small dark areas known as cataract. The risk of cataract increases with age, but other risk factors include Diabetes (cortical, "spoke-like" cataract), excessive drinking and smoking, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light or as a side effect of medication e.g.

Glaucoma is a very common eye condition and one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in the U.K. By being aware of it, we can detect it early and therefore reduce its impact. Generally described as damage to the optic nerve, glaucoma is usually associated with excessive pressure within the eye. The people most at risk are; those aged 40 plus, have dark pigmented irises, short sightedness, history of eye injury and particularly those with a family history of glaucoma. As there are virtually no symptoms in the early stages, it is important to have a regular check up every two years with your optician.
