We provide friendly, professional service to cater for all your family's eyecare needs: Private and NHS eye examinations; contact lenses; glasses - including state-of-the-art digitally designed varifocals and single-vision lenses, and the new seamless digital bifocal; sunglasses; and the Community Optometry Referral Refinement Scheme (CORRS - East Riding patients only). We are also able to screen for visual stress and pattern glare, which may contribute to symptoms of dyslexia, migraine and other headaches. We are specialists in digital FreeForm lenses, which offer greatly reduced distortions compared to conventional stock lenses, as well as being flatter and thinner.

NHS home visit service - if you are unable to leave home unaccompanied, we can come to your home for your eye examination. We don't offer free second pairs or sunglasses, or discounted 'eye tests'; we just offer friendly, professional service and quality eye wear at reasonable prices.

Eye Examinations

Eye Examinations

Eye examinations are very important as a primary health care screening service, not just for those who wear spectacles. Conditions such as high blood pressure, brain tumours and cancer of the colon can all show signs inside the eyes, as well as local conditions like glaucoma and cataract, so regular eye examinations play a very important role in general health care.

Conditions such as dyslexia, epilepsy and migraine can also be significantly improved by spectacles and tints, but the first step is to have an eye examination.

Home Visit Service

Home Visit Service

For patients who are unable to leave home unaccompanied, we are able to offer a Home Visit Service to all patients entitled to an eye examination on the NHS. This service, however is limited by NHS regulation, so we need to have at least 48 hours' notice to provide an eye examination at home on the NHS. This service includes all aspects of care we are able to carry out in-practice, including glaucoma screening, and we always bring a selection of frames and can dispense the same wide range of lenses, so less mobile patients can still enjoy the best vision possible.

We are also able to provide a home visit service to private patients.

From Our Website

Although the Government has put England into a national lockdown, on the guidance of the College of Optometrists routine sight tests and the provision of GOS (General Ophthalmic Services) are still available as normal. In-practice we will be following the standard operating procedures as proscribed by NHS England, regarding the wiping down of equipment, chairs and door handles, the use of full PPE, social distancing and the limitation of the number of people in the practice at any one time. To book an appointment or for further advice, please ring either the Cottingham branch on 01482 841359, or the Anlaby Road branch on 01482 566451.

After having worked for Edwards Opticians in Beverley since 1996, Stuart Buckingham took over the Spectacle Warehouse ( a branch of Edwards Opticians), on Anlaby Road in Hull, and Edwards Opticians (formery Jason @ Guy Philips) on Hallgate, Cottingham in July 2011. For fourteen of those years, Stuart provided the eye care at the Spectacle Warehouse and is famliar to many people in the area. It is our aim to provide a quality service and spectacles to suit most budgets. We don't offer cheap eye examinations, free second pairs or free sunglasses, just quality and value.

These days, our eyes are worked more and more - computers, lap-tops, tablets and smartphones have all increased the amount of near work we expect our eyes to perform. Many people find that these tasks can cause the eyes to feel sore, achey or uncomfortable, and that the vision may feel a little blurry. This can lead to general fatigue and tiredness, headaches - even migraines and double vision; it can even be associated with dyslexia. This is Visual Stress. Sometimes Visual Stress can be alleviated by eye exercises (Orthoptics), prescription glasses or even just by following the "20-20-20" Rule - every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

At Buckingham Opticians we endeavour to provide a friendly, efficient and reliable service. From booking your appointment, through the eye examination to the dispensing of your spectacles or contact lenses, we aim to do the best for you. We provide a comprehensive range of optometric services for the whole family, from Private and NHS Eye Examinations through to contact lenses, Visual Stress Screening, Safety Glasses, Office Eyewear and Sports Eyewear. If you are unable to leave home unaccompanied, we can come to you with our Home Visit Service.

So you have had your eye examination and have chosen the frame which is just right for you. Now it's time to decide on your lenses: single vision, bifocals, varifocals, occupational lenses; plastic, glass; standard refractive index, mid or high refractive index; tinted, Transitions; hard coating, UV coating, anti-reflective coatings. The choice can be bewildering. At Buckingham Opticians all of the spectacles we supply are dispensed by fully qualified, registered opticians, so we can quide you through the maze of lens choice and availability to dispense exactly the right lens type for you.
